Best Time to Trade Forex (Sessions & Overlaps)

The three sessions

Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York define the trading day. London is the largest by volume; New York is the largest by dollar value. Most movement clusters around their open hours.

Overlaps are the sweet spot

The London–New York overlap (roughly 13:00–17:00 UTC) is the most liquid and volatile window — tightest spreads and the biggest moves. The Tokyo–London overlap is quieter.

When to avoid trading

Friday late session, Sundays and major public holidays are thin and slippery — spreads widen and fake moves are common. News releases can spike volatility but also gap you through stops.

Match time to your style

Scalpers want the London–New York overlap; swing traders can ignore the clock and focus on levels. Pick sessions that fit your strategy and your timezone.
