How to Compare Trading Costs Like a Pro

Normalise to cost per lot

Convert everything to a single number: spread (in pips × $10 per pip on a standard lot) plus commission. Broker A: 0.0 spread + $7 commission = $7. Broker B: 0.8 spread + $0 = $8. A is cheaper despite the 'wider' headline. Do this for the pairs you trade most.

Use realistic volumes

Commissions often drop at higher tiers. If you trade 20 lots a day, the tier-3 rate matters more than the headline. Estimate your monthly volume and compare at that tier.

Include swap and data

For carry or long-term trades, swap dominates. For scalpers, execution speed and spread stability during news matter more than the commission. Weigh costs by your actual style, not the broker's marketing angle.

Stress-test on a demo

A demo with live spreads shows you the real all-in cost during volatile sessions, when marketing numbers quietly widen. Trust observed cost over advertised cost.
